Winter Bees

After a week of wet, windy, cool weather the sun came out.  It was a balmy 10 celsius (50 fahrenheit) today and the girls came out of the hive to celebrate.  I put some pollen by the entrance of the hive and some of the ladies partook in the smorgasbord.  Most chose to soak up the rays or snack on the sodium on my skin (I was naked).  Not really, but I was in short sleeves.

  1. It was a great day. My bees were busy carrying out the deceased and some were even bringing back pollen! Not sure where they were getting it from though.

  2. I noticed the same thing and have no idea where this orange pollen was coming from.

  3. met with great interest your blog. Well, I can see us in Russia now - 10 Celsius, the hives under a cap of snow ...

  4. It's great to hear from Russia. I hope you and your bees are well. We are lucky in Vancouver that we rarely go much below 0 degrees Celsius (32 Fahrenheit) but I guess bees like people get used to the cold. I know a beekeeper in Alaska where it will get down to 30 below occasionally and his bees do very well.
